How do we support nonspeaking and minimally speaking learners?
W​e believe there is no single methodology that works for all learners. Some communication methodologies prescribe a rigid step-by-step recipe to using their specific communication tools and their specific instructional methods. Multiple methods inform our practices, which draw on communication strategies from a variety of different sources.

At Reach Every Voice, we recognize that each student is unique and likely communicates in multiple and varied forms. That's why our focus for communication instruction comes from a lens of a text-based, multimodal AAC approach.

What is text-based multimodal AAC?
Multimodal communication essentially means using different modes or ways to communicate. Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) include all the ways we communicate other than speaking. So text-based, multimodal AAC can include communication through pointing to words or letters to share our thoughts.
Symbol-based systems have many benefits, but without the use of a keyboard or access to the alphabet and instruction in how to spell, learners are restricted by what others program into their devices and the limitations that motor-planning challenges can impose on navigation of multi-page systems.
Our instructors target both the purposeful motor skills needed to point to items such as individual letters or words as well as the phonics and literacy instruction so many of our learners never receive in their school settings.
When I first met Lisa I thought I was wasting more time playing silly alphabet games in yet another therapy. ​​ I couldn’t have been more wrong. ​​ She thoughtfully taught me how to move to point to letters to spell my real thoughts. This literally saved my life. I’m forever amazed in the complete faith she had in me.
